The Windows Desktop

Step 1: The Windows Desktop

When your computer finishes loading Windows, the Windows desktop will be displayed. The desktop is your workspace, where you work with file folders, programs, and documents including any windows that you have open at the time. You can always get back to the desktop, even if you open an application program and expand it to fill the whole screen.

A typical Windows 98 desktop is populated with labeled icons. When you double-click an icon, it opens in a rectangular frame called a window. This window can be resized to suit your requirements. The icons on your desktop provide quick access to the places on your computer that you visit most often. If they don't, you can add or subtract icons.

Step 2: Folder Icons

Folder icons open into folder windows, which reveal the contents of particular folders in your computerized filing system. (This window is currently displayed in standard view. If you display a window in Web-page view, it will contain a few additional elements.)

Step 3: Program Icons

Program icons open into application programs-that is, they load the associated programs into memory and start them running.

Step 4: Shortcut Icons

Shortcut icons provide alternative ways to enter programs, documents, and folders. Shortcut icons always have arrows on them.

Step 5: Special Icons

Your Windows desktop will contain shortcuts to items such as the recycle bin, My Computer, My Documents & My briefcase, these are shortcuts that are installed by default by Windows.
