What is MP3 ?

MP3 is short for "MPEG 1 Layer 3,"

how do I convert an mp3 into a .wav file ?

Decoding MP3 files used to be a bit difficult, but it is now one of the easiest things you could do. You probably already have the software, to decode MP3 files installed on your PC, and don't even know it! The best, and easiest decoder to use,  I believe is Music Match it's free to use, but your a restricted on your Rips. To get the full version but have to pay a small fee, but with this you get regular updates plus other items. You have 3 options Mp3, Mp3pro or Wav and you can change either format into either format.

Mp3 Help

I downloaded a file which ends in .ZIP, .CLASS, .BIN, .RAR, .XLS, .VIV, what do I do ?

ZIP FILES
try to unzip it (with Winzip or similar)
You may be asked for a password.
if Winzip says it cannot decode the file, rename the file to what-you-want.Mp3 and play it.
if it still does not work, rename the file to .rar and unrar it.

.BIN .CLASS .GED .DOC .XLS .... and all other exotic file extensions
rename to what-you-want-here.mp3 and play it .
rename to .zip and unzip it (with Winzip or similar)
if it still does not work, rename the file to what-you-want.rar and unrar it.

.RAR .XLS
try to unrar it  and play it with WinAmp
You may be asked for a password
(the most common password for an mp3 file with an .xls entension and encoded in rar is mp3hitz)
rename to what-you-want-here.mp3 and play it with WinAmp

.VIV
try to play it in Winamp
if it does not work, try to rename it to what-you-want .zip and unzip it
if it does not work, try to rename it to what-you-want .rar and unrar it
You may be asked for a password

This fully covers what you should do with specific file extensions to get your mp3 to play fine.

First of all make sure you can modify file extensions :

open Windows Explorer
in the 'View' menu, select folder options
then click on View
Deselect the option "hide file extensions for known file types"

From now on, you will be able to easily rename files in Windows by right-clicking the file to rename, select rename, then give the file a new name.
