Double-click My Computer Icon
Double-click My Computer Icon

The My Computer icon is usually located in the top left corner of your desktop. Double-click the icon and a window will be displayed with all of your disk drives and several other icons.
Double-click Drive


When My Computer comes up, you'll see a window with all of the hard drives available to you. Double-click the drive where the file you want to make read-only is located.

Access the Properties
Access the Properties

Once you have found the file, right-click on it. You'll be shown a menu. Located at the bottom of the menu is Properties. Click this to get the property box for that file.
Check Hidden

Located at the bottom of the property window is a section titled Attributes. The second checkbox of this section is hidden. Put a check in this box and click the Apply or OK button to make the changes.
Click Options
Click Options

The Options choice is located under the View menu while you're in Windows Explorer. You'll be shown the Options window.
Hide Files of These Type
Hide Files of These Type

In the hidden file section are two choices: Show all files or Hide files of these types. You can only choose one of these. If you want the files that you've changed the attribute to hidden to not show in Windows Explorer, you'll need to choose Hide files of these types.
